Development Workshop Sessions
Intersectional Feminism in Camping: A Call to Action Simone Gamble, www.OAAARS.com In this workshop, participants will learn about the concept of Intersectionality and its relevance to camping. Participants will discuss the way women and femmes in camping can align their feminist politic with all women and centering those most marginalized. We will discuss gaps that exist for certain groups and learn the tools of accompliceship. Gather ‘round the Campfire! Emily (EmJ) Juszczyk, Camps and Programs Director They say there's an opportunity to learn from every person you come to meet and that’s the plan! Come grab a seat around the campfire that is our development round table. Bring you burning questions about professionalism in camp and set it next to the expertise you already have with you. We will be discussing a wide variety of development: professional, self-care, leadership, etc. This session is centered around types of development but like a fire in the wind, there is no telling which way we'll go. Not Just a Game of Capture the Flag! Susanna (Shoshi) Rothschild, Independent Consultant Even a game of Capture the Flag should have purpose behind it! Borrowing methodologies adapted from Design Thinking, participants will be led through a program development process that encourages them to design thoughtful, intentional, and meaningful programs, using their camps' mission and values as guiding principles. I Should've Fired That Staff Member...... Kelly Schuna, Hidden Pines Ranch I should've fired that staff member.. but I didn't. Learn from my fear of firing a toxic staff member and the growth to be brave enough to handle that differently next time. Gain tools and resources on having tough conversation, implementing performance improvement plans and making the tough decision for the betterment of your staff & culture. Embracing LGBTQ2+ At Camp: This Ain't No 101-Level S#!* Kate Taylor, Camp YMCA Kanawana Who else is tired of conference sessions about LGBTQ2+ issues in camp that go over the glossary of terms for the first 20 minutes? This development workshop will hold space for us to get into some concrete problem solving for the traditionally gendered spaces in summer camp, and suggest immediate action steps for you to take with your organization.
